IP Expertise

Mr. Alley brings years of in-depth experience across many intellectual property disciplines to his practice.

His patent experience includes counseling clients through all stages of patent procurement before domestic and foreign patent offices. Mr. Alley has prepared thousands of new applications and responses before the USPTO in utility, design, and reissue applications, for both original applications and foreign-originating applications filed under the Paris Convention and PCT. Mr. Alley has advised clients in IP harvesting, portfolio and competitive evaluation, day-to-day procedures in the USPTO, licensing, and freedom-to-operate and infringement support matters. His trademark experience includes conducting trademark searches, application filing and prosecution, and policing.

Mr. Alley has lectured on several topics in intellectual property and is active in several DC-area IP activities. Prior to founding Ryan Alley Intellectual Property Law, Mr. Alley was a patent attorney in a large IP boutique law firm in the Washington, DC area for several years.

Education & Memberships

Mr. Alley holds a Juris Doctor from The George Washington University School of Law, where he studied Intellectual Property Law. Mr. Alley holds a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University, where he was a member of Alpha Nu Sigma, a nuclear academic honorary society.

Mr. Alley is a registered Patent Attorney before the US Patent and Trademark Office and a member of the Virginia and California Bar Associations. Mr. Alley is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, where he has served as chair of the Giles S. Rich Memorial Moot Court Committee, the Meetings Committee, and on the Editorial Board of the AIPLA Quarterly Journal.

Mr. Alley’s technical experience extends throughout several different technology sectors, including: semiconductor fabrication and operation in memory devices, camera packages, LCD circuitry, and several other integrated circuit applications; DVD and Blu-Ray Disc physics and data structure; video encoding standards, including MPEG-2/4 and AVC; wireless networking and communications protocols such as CDMA, EV-DO, 802.11, and WiFi; software development and implementation, smartphone applications, and social media; consumer electronics, including printers, power tools, and power storage media such as lithium ion cells and NiCad; computerized data analysis and system modeling; electrical power generation, balance of plant and operations, and thermodynamic systems; nuclear power plants and facilities, fuels, and services for Light Water Reactor and Molten Salt Reactor technologies; materials and alloys; radioisotope fabrication, handling, and use in cancer therapies, medical diagnostic technology, and industrial applications.
